Children In ClassroomAbout HopeMark Preschool

HopeMark Preschool was established in 1971, as a community outreach project between St. Mark’s Episcopalian Church and Hope United Church of Christ.  We are housed on the top floor of Hope UCC, at Eichelberger and Tamm Avenues, on the corner of Francis Park in St. Louis Hills.  We are a nonprofit, license exempt preschool that is governed by a board of directors and is in compliance with the State of Missouri Department of Child Health & Safety.

We have two large, fully equipped classrooms and offer 2 and 3 day morning classes and  4 day afternoon Pre-Kindergarten classes.  There are two certified teachers in each classroom, with a maximum student teacher ratio of 10:1.  There is also a weekly music session.  Our outdoor playground was updated in 2006 with new equipment and soft surface turf.  We also have an indoor gymnasium to allow for large motor activity on inclement weather days. HopeMark operates on the Bank Street Philosophy, adopted in 1916 by renowned children’s education researcher Lucy Sprague Mitchell.   The main emphasis of Bank Street is that children learn through play.  Play allows children to understand their world.  Children develop social skills through interaction with other children. Manipulative play enables children to problem solve and develop fine motor skills. Through art, children learn creativity and decision making.  Dramatic play enhances social, emotional and language skills.   Playground activities encourage better hand-eye coordination, and develop gross motor skills. It is our belief that play in a safe and supportive environment fosters a life-long love of learning.

While play is a major component of our curriculum, we also concentrate on cognitive skills needed for kindergarten, encompassing the Common Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence.  Parent / teacher conferences are held each November and March.  Teachers observe the children in the areas of social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.  At the conference, teachers and parents develop an action plan to enrich strengths and cultivate areas for improvement.

You are welcome to download a sample teacher observation sheet.
